Short answer

What is a digital family calendar?

A digital family calendar is a shared schedule everyone at home can see, shown in an app on each phone or on a screen in a shared room.

There are three ways to put one on a wall. You can buy a dedicated display such as Skylight Calendar ($149.99–$569.99) or Hearth Display ($699 list), mount a tablet running a calendar app, or use a TV you already own. Dedicated displays are touchscreens with photo modes and broad calendar sync, and several of their features sit behind a subscription: Skylight Plus is $79 a year and Hearth’s Family Membership is $5.76–$9 a month (prices checked 26 September 2026). A TV adds no hardware cost if you have one, and kids use the remote instead of a touchscreen.

The short verdict: choose a dedicated display if you want touch and photos on the kitchen wall. Choose the TV you already own if you would rather not buy another screen and want each person’s day, and the time to leave, in view.

“Not verified” means the vendor’s pages we checked were silent, not that the feature is missing. Skylight’s own pages disagree on exactly which features are free without Plus.

Other family calendars people ask about

We haven’t verified these on the makers’ own sites yet, so they aren’t in the table.

  • Other dedicated screens: Cozyla Calendar and Amazon Echo Show. Both are screens you buy; we’ll add prices once checked.
  • Other TV apps: Luana and Mango Display also put a family calendar on a TV you own.
  • Do-it-yourself dashboards: DAKboard and MagicMirror suit people happy to set up their own screen and software.

What is the highest rated digital calendar?

There is no independent ranking, so the fairest answer uses each company's own published ratings, and Skylight and Cozi both show 4.8 stars.

Skylight Calendar shows 4.8 stars from 3,798 reviews on its product page, and its hero claims more than 7,000 five-star ratings. Hearth Display shows 4.7 out of 5 from 786 reviews on its product page. Cozi’s homepage claims 4.8 stars alongside 21 million downloads. Skylight also carries a Wirecutter 2026 “As Featured In” badge.

We read these on 26 September 2026. They are self-reported by each vendor, and they measure how happy owners are with the product they chose, not whether it suits your family. FamilyOrganization.app is in beta and has no public ratings yet, so we don’t show any. If ratings are your tie-breaker, read the one- and two-star reviews too: they show what owners wish they had known, such as which features need a subscription.

Is it worth getting a digital calendar?

For most busy families, yes, as long as everyone can see it without opening an app and someone keeps it up to date.

A shared screen helps because nobody has to remember to look: kids and adults see what’s next as they walk past. The cost depends on the route. A dedicated display costs $149.99–$569.99 for Skylight or $699 list for Hearth, and some features sit behind a subscription (Skylight Plus at $79 a year; Hearth’s Family Membership at $5.76–$9 a month, checked 26 September 2026). A phone app like Cozi costs little or nothing but is easy to ignore, especially for kids without phones.

A TV you already own is the middle path: big and visible like a wall screen, with no new hardware. It is less worth it if nobody will keep the calendar updated, so pick the option your family will actually maintain.

  • Buying a screen is worth it if…

    • You want a touchscreen on the kitchen wall
    • Family photos between events matter to you
    • Your TV isn't in a room the family passes
  • Try the TV you own first if…

    • The TV is where the family gathers
    • Your kids have no phones and you'd rather not add a tablet
    • Time is the hard part, so a leave-by countdown helps
  • A phone app is enough if…

    • Everyone who needs the calendar has a phone
    • You mostly need shared lists
    • Nobody needs a reminder on the way out the door

Why the countdown matters to some families: see the leave-by countdown and the ADHD-friendly family calendar.

What is the best free digital calendar?

The best free digital family calendar is usually an app, not a screen, because every wall display costs money up front.

Cozi is the best-known free family calendar app. Its free plan is ad-supported, and Cozi Gold ($39 a year) removes ads and unlocks month view and extra reminders (cozi.com, checked 26 September 2026). A shared Google or iCloud calendar costs nothing but has no chores or kid view.

Among screens, Skylight’s calendar sync and chore chart work without its optional Plus plan ($79 a year), but the screen itself costs $149.99 or more. Hearth’s calendar and profiles work without a membership, though routines, rewards, lists and meals need it. FamilyOrganization.app uses a TV you already own, so there is no hardware to buy; software pricing is announced at launch, so we don’t call it free.

What is the best digital calendar with a photo screensaver?

If a photo screensaver matters to you, choose Skylight Calendar or Hearth Display, because FamilyOrganization.app has no photo frame.

Skylight’s Photo & Video Screensaver, with albums and captions, is part of Calendar Plus at $79 a year (myskylight.com, checked 26 September 2026). In the recent App Store reviews we counted, owners said the photo screensaver moved behind Plus in mid-2026, so check what’s included when you buy. Hearth Display can show rotating photo wallpaper in place of the calendar.

FamilyOrganization.app uses the screen for something else: it keeps the family’s day in view, with a timeline for each person, a LEAVE IN countdown before appointments and a mealtime menu with food photos. If you want both photos and a timeline, a Skylight or Hearth in the kitchen and the TV in the living room can work side by side. See how the visual timeline works.
