Short answer
Hearth Display vs Skylight: which is better?
Hearth Display is better for one big wall screen built around kids' routines and rewards; Skylight is better for a lower price and more sizes.
Hearth Display is a 27-inch wall-mounted touchscreen family calendar made by Hearth (hearthdisplay.com); it is not a thermostat, a fitness tracker or an art frame. It lists at $699, and routines, Stars & Rewards, to-dos, lists and meal planning need a Family Membership of $5.76–$9 a month. Skylight Calendar comes in 10, 15 and 27-inch sizes for $149.99–$569.99, works on a countertop or the wall, and syncs more calendar services; meal planning, rewards and the photo screensaver are in Plus at $79 a year (both checked 26 September 2026).
A third option is the TV you already own. FamilyOrganization.app shows each person’s timeline and a LEAVE IN countdown on a Roku TV, with no screen to buy. It has no photo frame, and rewards are coming soon.
Head to head
How do Hearth, Skylight and the TV compare, feature by feature?
Hearth and Skylight both sell a touchscreen and put key features behind a subscription. The TV option needs no new hardware.
Hearth Display vs Skylight Calendar vs the TV you already own (as of 26 September 2026)
Hearth is better than Skylight if routines and rewards are the main job and you want one large portrait screen; otherwise Skylight costs less for similar calendar basics.
Pick Hearth if your kids respond to visual routines with icons, streaks and stars, and you’re comfortable paying $699 plus the membership, since those features sit inside it. Hearth also has Hearth Helper, which drafts events and meal plans from a text or a photo of a paper schedule. Pick Skylight if you want a smaller or countertop screen, an entry price from $149.99, and broader calendar sync with Google, Apple, Outlook, Yahoo and Cozi; its basic calendar and chore chart work without Plus.
Pick neither if the family already gathers around a TV. FamilyOrganization.app uses the TV and the remote, so kids check off chores without a tablet, and every TV in the house can show the day. Both Hearth and Skylight are touchscreens; FamilyOrganization.app is not.
Choose Hearth if…
Routines, stars and rewards are the main job
You want one large screen on the wall
You're fine with a monthly membership
Choose Skylight if…
You want a lower entry price or a countertop size
You need Yahoo, Cozi or email-in calendar sync
A photo screensaver matters (in Plus)
Choose the TV you own if…
You'd rather not buy another screen
Time is the hard part, so you want a leave countdown
Kids should use the remote, not a tablet
Can you use Hearth Display without a subscription?
Partly: without the Family Membership, Hearth says you can view your calendar, sync calendars and keep unlimited profiles, but most other features need it.
Routines, Stars & Rewards, to-dos, lists, meal planning, the weather widget and the Hearth Helper AI are membership features, and Hearth lists its companion app as a membership benefit too. The membership costs $9 a month, or $86.40 for one year, $155.52 for two or $207.36 for three, after a 30-day free trial (hearthdisplay.com, checked 26 September 2026).
Hearth’s own pages disagree on whether it is required. Its membership page says a membership is “required to set up your Hearth Display”. Its product-page FAQ answers whether you need one with “Nope.”, and its neurodiversity page calls it “completely optional”. If this matters to you, ask Hearth directly before you buy one.

Cost
What does each cost over 3 years?
Over three years, Hearth Display costs $906.36 at best, and Skylight's 15-inch Calendar 2 with Plus about $537, before discounts.

Three-year cost of ownership (as of 26 September 2026)
The closest alternative to Hearth Display is Skylight Calendar, another touchscreen family calendar; the alternative with no screen to buy is the TV you already own.
Skylight’s 27-inch Calendar Max ($569.99) matches Hearth’s size, and its 15-inch Calendar 2 ($299.99 with the Plus bundle) is its best seller (checked 26 September 2026). Like Hearth, it keeps rewards and meal planning behind a subscription: Plus, at $79 a year.
If the family already gathers around a TV, FamilyOrganization.app turns a Roku TV into a family dashboard: a timeline for each person, GET READY and TRAVEL TIME blocks with a LEAVE IN countdown, routines that reset daily, and chores kids check off with the remote. Apple TV, Fire TV and Google TV versions are coming soon. Luana and Mango Display are other apps that put a family calendar on a TV, and Cozi is a phone app with a free plan. None of these copies Hearth’s portrait wall screen, so first decide whether touch matters. See Skylight alternatives.
