Build Journey

I Built an Entire Android App in a Day, and I Still Don't Quite Believe It

September 23: an Android port of the iPhone app.

The Ford family · Josh, dad and builder of FamilyOrganization.app, writing up his build journey

On September 23 I built an Android app as a port of the iPhone app, against the same Supabase project: 27 screens across Today, Plan, Displays and Family, the thirteen data repositories behind them, live updates, calendar sync, Roku discovery and control, and the photo and audio handling. About 27,000 lines of Kotlin.

I checked it by building it. The tests run 178 shared cases, and both the debug app and the production bundle build, with no lint errors.

Four things would have shipped broken: two Android phones in one household would have mixed up each other's calendar events, the shrinker would have deleted the sound pack, and one screen would have crashed on open because of a nested scroll. It's in the repository and not available to families yet. Android is coming soon.

Built on September 23, 2026 (commit 2c0b961). Written up on October 2, 2026 from my commit history.
