On August 7 I made the Roku app pair with a phone. The TV signs in anonymously, shows a short code, and checks until a phone claims it. Then it gets a session limited to that household. The real database address and key live in a file that's kept out of git, with only an example file committed.
The same day I also made task check-offs on the TV write back to the database, so a task checked off on the TV is saved. That's the start of kids checking off chores with the remote.
